So this is probably old news by now! I mean, several in the industry got a preview version weeks ago. But Google finally sent my update to my Nexus and I have been living with it for a week now! My impressions:
-
Speed! Oh, it's much, much faster! The funny thing, I never thought 2.1 was slow. But you can certainly tell a difference.
-
Flash! So far I am very impressed with Flash and how it renders on the Nexus. In all honesty, I haven't explored a whole lot of flash heavy sites, but I have been to enough to know that Adobe's "beta" is pretty good so far!
-
Asthetics: One thing that has changed is that now in addition to the home icon on every screen, you now have a phone and browser icon. This is a biggie for me. I've gripped for a while now on how smartphone companies continue to dumb down the "phone" portion of a smartphone. I would still prefer a hardware button, but at least this icon is located on every screen.

- WiFi Tethering! This is a feature that I actually do use often. Prior to 2.2, this was accomplished with PdaNet, and either tethered or through bluetooth. Now, its just like a WiFi network and I'm loving it! This is a sweet addition.
- SD Card Storage: This has been needed for a while! The one thing I've noticed though is that it doesn't give the user a choice . . It's pretty automatic! I do know that my third party apps have expanded quite a bit since 2.2. But with that said, I really would like to see something like users had on the Palm Treos. And that was where you could put a whole app on the card with just a short-cut residing on the phone. If your Android device is app intensive, you still may find yourself conserving ROM.
- Camera: The camera has a new look! Controls are better and easier to access!
- Overall Impressions: 2.2 is a large improvement over 2.1. Support for Flash, SD Card Storage, The ability to tether a laptop to the data connection, are all biggies in the Smartphone world. iOS4 killer? No way! Regular readers here know that I like what Google is doing with their mobile OS! Voice and Maps blow the iPhone away! The Android Music player is an embarrassment! And give iOS props for user interface and still the best app store in the industry! Google is coming strong however! And with HTC throwing out devices like the Sprint EVO, and the Verizon Incredible, and Google hard at work on the next version (Gingerbread) Google is certainly on the right path!
