What I'd like to see in Android's Gingerbread

AndroidBack in September, Google's Andy Rubin said that Gingerbread may include better social-media hooks, better gaming options, and ways to blend the Web and native Applications. Now, none of that is bad!. But I have my own list of things I would like to see on my Nexus One. And honestly, I am expecting most of these soon!

  • Better Email - Gmail rocks! But not everyone wants or uses Gmail. Many of us have our own IMAP email servers. And Google's IMAP implementation sucks! Google, give us an email client that supports the IDLE IMAP standards. If you are looking for inspiration, find an old Palm Treo and take a long hard look at Chatteremail. Multiple accounts with the ability to assign different ring tones to different accounts, constantly connected, and the ability to create new folders on the fly several folders deep. That's what your email client should be capable of doing.
  • Faster upgrades - As of this writing, the world is expecting the SDK release of Gingerbread. Yet, many with devices capable of running 2.3 are still sitting at 2.1 or below. (Sony's Xperia comes to mind) Google, you might not think this is your problem as much as it's HTC's, Motorola's or Samsung's. I totally disagree! All of this customization is hurting your end product in the long run! This needs to end now!
  • Google Docs mobilized - For the most part, Google has done an incredible job of mobilizing their products and services into the Android Platform. Google's Voice app comes immediately to mind! But then I look at Google Docs. Nothing for the mobile platform. Google Docs is a pretty good Office Suite solution, and the price is certainly right! But trying to use it in the Android browser is a major fail, and immediately drives me back to Docs to Go and Microsoft's Office. UPDATE: Google has recently updated it's Docs to allow for mobile editing. I would still like to see a capable App such as Docs to Go, but at least you can now open the browser and edit on the go.
  • Video Chat - As I stated above, Google Voice is an awesome app! But it's missing the Video equation. What would really be nice would be to include Google's talk, voice and video into one app for both mobile and web. And the mobile Video app needs to work VOiP as well as over WiFi.
  • Real Copy/Paste ability - Enough Said
  • A better Music/Movie solution - I'm sorry Google, but your music app is an embarrassment. Yea, it's not hard to drag and drop my tunes from my computer to my card. And I know that I can head over to Amazon and purchase some tunes that will download OTA to my device. AND I know that this past spring you demoed a streaming ability from a remote computer to your Nexus. And that was very cool! Maybe it's ready for 2.3, maybe it isn't. But your current media player really isn't much and I know that you can do better. What I would just love would be for you to create gtunes! Movies, Music, Shows, books all within the Google Cloud, and I could browse/purchase all that from my Nexus! That would be awesome!
