For a while now I have been living in Google's services and loving it. And one of my favorites is Google Voice. Who wouldn't love Voicemail that is transcribed into text for you, a free phone number that can make free calls anywhere in the USA and Canada, free calling and texting from your mobile and your PC, and the ability to forward any phone to that number? Honestly, I can't figure out why anyone with a mobile phone doesn't use it! But how would you utilize Google Voice on an iPad you ask? Meet Talkatone! This app uses your Google Talk and Voice profiles and interfaces them within the iOS environment. And then adds an ability that isn't yet available within Google Voice: Calling over Wifi. Call Quality for me so far has been excellent everytime but once. I'm not sure that I can blame Talkatone, Google or the other parties connection, but all other calls have been crystal clear and they don't seem to have a problem on my end.
Talkatone is totally free and includes these features:
• Free calls/texts on all iOS4 devices over WiFi or 3G through Google's Voice and Talk services
• Real-time location sharing
• Uses backgrounding mode and local notifications for instant call/text alerts when app is inactive
• High quality audio with voice compression
If you have a Google Voice Number and an iPad, I would highly recommend this app! It isn't fully optimized for the iPad's display, but that doesn't stop the app from being a rock solid means to make and recieve calls and texts right from the comfort of your iPad.
